DataECO at 4S Toronto 2026
DataECO participated in the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), held in Toronto, Canada, from October 7 to 10. Researchers Ezequiel Soriano and Emiliano Treré contributed two papers addressing the political, material, and ecological limits of computational expansion.
The first paper, “Contested Computation: Toward a Planetary Politics of Computational Limits,” was presented in the panel Data Activism: Repairing and Imagining Collective Futures. It explored the infrastructural turn in digital activism, examining how struggles over computational infrastructures are reshaping activist practices and opening up new possibilities for collectively negotiating the limits of computation.
The second paper, “Data Finitude: Data Centers and the Limits of Computation,” was presented in the panel Future Directions for Critical Data Center Studies. It explored the solutions and alternatives proposed by different actors to address the ecological impacts of artificial intelligence, as well as the visions of technological futures associated with these proposals.
Both contributions advance DataECO's research on the socio-environmental impacts of digital infrastructures, the contestation of data centre expansion, and alternative imaginaries for technological futures.
